Thirteen undocumented immigrants protesting Alabama's new immigration law were arrested in Montgomery Tuesday, officials said. The Montgomery Advertiser reported those arrested, who were among 70 people who took part in the peaceful, 2-hour protest at the state Capitol, live in various states and were aware they risk being deported if arrested."This is a nation of immigrants, and as immigrants we have the right to be here," said Martin Unzueta, 57, an undocumented immigrant from Illinois who sat with 10 other people on a mat reading "We will no longer remain in the shadows."Mauricio Martel said his 17-year-old daughter Diane was among those arrested."It's all in favor of our rights in a community, and that's why we're fighting against this law of hate," Martel, an immigrant from Mexico who lives in Bessemer, Ala., told the newspaper through an interpreter.Montgomery police Chief Kevin J. Murphy said those arrested would be asked to provide documentation, which could lead to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement being contacted.
