Five shipyard workers in the northern Philippines were killed Friday when a steel platform fell on them, police said. Eight workers were also severely injured in the accident in yard operated by Keppel Shipyard Limited in the Freeport area in Subic town, Zambales province, 90 kilometres north of Manila. Workers were using the platform as a bridge to a ship being repaired, when it dropped onto others below, said Senior Superintendent Francisco Santiago, the provincial police director. Subic town Mayor Jeffrey Khonghun said initial reports showed the platform weighed 42 tons. It was not yet known what caused it to fall, police said.
