Seoul - UPI

It's significant that South Korea is the site of a summit that advocates the peaceful use of nuclear energy, the Nigerian president said from Seoul. South Korean officials are the hosts for a nuclear summit this week. Nigeria President Goodluck Jonathan, on his first visit to Seoul, told South Korea's news agency Yonhap that the venue was significant. "(South Korea) has technology to use the nuclear power in so many ways. So, for them to draw vision for the peaceful use of nuclear energy is good," Jonathan said. "(The summit) is quite significant." He is to meet with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak on Wednesday to discuss economic opportunities. "Nigeria is a country with lots of natural resources. South Korea, on the other hand, is industrialized," he said. "So, if two countries commit together, they can really enhance (economies ties)." Nigeria has some of the richest oil deposits in the world. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a statement to the delegates said partnerships between members of the nuclear industry and civil society were important for peace. "I welcome this summit's reaffirmation of our shared goals of nuclear disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation and peaceful uses of nuclear energy and I call for the full implementation of commitments undertaken," he said in a statement.
