New Delhi - Arabstoday

An Indian visitor kidnapped a six-day-old baby girl and kept her for a few hours before the police intervened, a court heard on Wednesday. The 35-year-old man is facing the charges of kidnap, threat and consumption of liquor, in the Court of First Instance. According to the prosecution records, he kidnapped the newborn after her mother gave the baby to him and went inside her flat to collect a head cover. He went to his hotel room and threatened to jump from the balcony with the baby in his hands if the mother and hotel staff got closer to him and tried to take the baby away from him by force. The baby’s 35-year-old Indian working mother told the prosecutor that the defendant came to her place just before noon on November 27 last year. He wanted to enter her apartment to see the baby girl. But the mother did not let him in because he was drunk. She told him to wait in his car and she would let him see the girl. When they reached the lift, he requested her to allow him to carry the baby and the woman handed over the baby. The mother went inside her flat to bring a head cover for the baby. When she returned to the lift, the defendant had gone with the baby. The mother panicked because she knew that he would be driving under the influence of liquor. Soon, she received a phone call from the defendant who told her about the location of a hotel in Dubai Marina where he was heading to. She went to his hotel room and tried to take the baby back in vain. The defendant then tried to take the baby with him in his car but the mother did not let him. He hired a cab and the woman also travelled in the vehicle with him. He asked the cabbie to take them to Shaikh Zayed Road. She called her husband and informed him about what was going on.When they stepped off the cab, she again tried to take her daughter from his hands but could not. They went back to the hotel and by that time, her husband came to the hotel room. Two hotel managers tried to talk the accused into giving the baby back to her parents. But the defendant would not and threatened he would jump with the baby if they got closer to take her by force. The parents were told by the hotel reception staff to go home and come back when the defendant, who had gone out again, came back.  When they reached the hotel again later, the parents as well as the hotel staff tried again to make the defendant return the baby. He became nervous because of the crowd around him and claimed that the baby was his but did not give further details. The parents finally called the police. The baby’s fawther, who works for a local bank, confirmed his wife’s statement in the court. He said the hotel manager told them to try and settle the ‘family problem’ amicably. An Emirati policeman said he intercepted the defendant at the hotel gate that day. The latter would not give the baby back to her parents and claimed she was his daughter. The officer took him along with the baby in the police patrol car to the Jebel Ali police station. New Delhi - Khaleej times
