Six alleged Somali pirates are on trial in Paris for the 2008 kidnapping of a French couple off the coast of Somalia, officials said. Prosecutors say the alleged pirates had demanded a ransom of $2.7 million for the release of Jean-Yves Delanne and his wife, Bernadette, who were rescued by French special forces. It is the first Somali piracy trial to be held in France, Radio France Internationale reported Wednesday. Three other piracy cases are pending. The Somali men, charged with hijacking, kidnapping and armed robbery, were captured during the couple's rescue. A seventh suspect was killed in the raid, RFI said.
