President Robert Mugabe has sworn in Zimbabwe's anti-corruption commission in an effort to stem graft in the southern African country, state media reported Friday. Mugabe appointed a nine-member team of commissioners drawn from various professions including lawyers, clergy men, administrators and former police officers, The Herald reported. The daily said the Anti-Corruption Commission "acts as a government agent in implementing anti-corruption policies." The newspaper said that the commission would ensure "that alleged offenders are prosecuted and that where acts of corruption are proved, the necessary costs are recovered or returned to the victims, which in most cases is the state." The establishment of the commission was part of a 2009 power sharing deal between Mugabe and Prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai, a long-time rival. Other commissions that have been appointed that are already functional includes the electoral commission and media commission. The Human Rights Commission has already been appointed but the Human Rights Bill is yet to be passed into law in parliament.
