A Sharjah police officer ordered to transport a prisoner to Dubai instead released him in return for a Dh3,000 bribe, a court heard.
Prosecutors charged the Emirati, whose age was not given in court records, with taking a bribe and releasing a detainee.
He denied the charges when he appeared before Dubai Criminal Court.
The 52-year-old Indian who was released from custody also attended the hearing. He was also charged along with two others with aiding and abetting by offering the bribe.
"It wasn’t me who paid him the money, it was someone else your honour and I plead for your mercy," he said.
Records state on August 30 last year the officer was ordered to drive the detainee to Bur Dubai Police station from Sharjah. On the way, prosecutors said, the prisoner begged the officer to set him free. He agreed but asked for Dh3,000 in return. The detainee called his son to arrange for the cash.
"He met with the son and another man at an Enoc petrol station in Dubai and took the cash then released him," prosecutors said.
The officer was arrested a few days later after the detainee handed himself into police. The officer had spent Dh2,000 of the bribe while the remaining Dh1,000 was confiscated.
Records show the detainee’s son told his father to go to the police.
