Al Azhar condemned on Friday a decision by Israeli authorities to close Al Aqsa Mosque and prevent worshipers from performing Friday prayers.
The Israeli authorities also assaulted worshipers and the mosque’s guards while detained Palestinian Grand Mufti of Al Quds Mohammad Hussein, former Grand Mufti Ekrima Sabri and Aqsa Mosque Imam.
Azhar warned of misusing these incidents to carry out Israeli plot aiming at Judaizating al Quds city and Aqsa Mosque. It asserted that such Israel measures would breed anger among Muslims worldwide, as well as threatening stability in the region.
Azhar also urged international community to shoulder the responsibility and halt Israeli continuing violations of international laws and norms.
The statement also called for reopening Aqsa Mosque and releasing the detainees.
Earlier, a shooting incident in the Old City of Al Quds left at least three Palestinians dead and others injured.
Following the shooting, Israeli police declared that Friday's Muslim prayers will not be held at the holy site.
