The opening of Salmiyah Theatre is one of the steps being made to develop cultural establishments in Kuwait, Information Minister Sheikh Salman Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah said on Thursday.
The comments came as Sheikh Salman, also State Youth Minister and President of the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters, was handing out awards to cultural icons from around the six-state neighbouring Gulf Cooperation Council.
He noted to a "comprehensive cultural and arts development strategy which has received the support of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah." Expressing delight at their attendance, he said that the honored cultural personalities "have done their best to enlighten the path of knowledge and awareness through their intellectual wisdom." Their honouring today "goes far beyond being a symbolic gesture and is considered an appreciation of culture and a victory for the illumination of the human mind.
"The awareness of nations is assessed by the treasure trove of scientists and thinkers they possess," he added.
The event was also attended by GCC culture ministers, alongside the secretary general, who are attending joint talks in Kuwait.
For his part, GCC chief Abdullatif Al-Zayani praised the combined efforts to promote culture across the six states.
The event comes a day after the grand opening of the National Library of Kuwait, which was held under the patronage of His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, and attended by him.
