Al Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed el Tayyeb said crimes committed by militant groups have nothing to do with religions.
EL Tayyeb's remarks came during a meeting on Monday with member of the German parliament Volker Kauder.
All religions denounce violence, adding that Daesh terror group is trying to justify its crimes by attributing it to Islam.
"Their actions are non-Islamic at all," the Grand Imam told Kauder.
Its Muslims who are suffering the most from those extremists, he added.
He also touched on the freedom of speech issue, noting that while strongly condemning killing people for their opinions, Muslims do not compromise insulting their sacred figures and beliefs.
"Not all Muslims are terrorists, those who killed Charlie Hebdo cartoonists are. It is unfair to paint all Muslims with the same brush," the Grand Imam said.
The German lawmaker, for his part, underscored Al Azhar's significant role in clarifying the true nature of Islam, adding that Europe considers it the main body that is authorized to interpret Islamic teachings.
