A rare seahorse has been spotted by the Emirates Marine Environmental Group at Dubai Ladies Club Beach in Jumeirah.
According to Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National, the group also found more than 120 different species of sea creatures such as plankton, bottom fauna, coral reefs and fish at the beach.
This sighting is the first of its kind in the area. Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, president of the Dubai Women's Establishment, said they were glad they witnessed an important discovery.
"The UAE is rich in beaches and marine environment, and today with the discovery of seahorse at Dubai Ladies Club Beach, our sense of responsibility towards protecting the rare natural environment increases all the more,” she said.
Ali Al Suwaidi, president of the environmental group, said the seahorse is an endangered species and there is little information about it.
