Beirut – Arabstoday

Turkish company brings 188 more megawatts Beirut – Arabstoday A huge Turkish ship has docked in Lebanon, in a bid to boost the country’s power supply. The freighter, the Fatmagul Sultan, will dock on a special 100-metre platform in Beirut as part of a $370m deal to bring energy to Lebanon’s ailing infrastructure. Power outages and shortages have precipitated a growing demand for electricity in Lebanon in recent months. The ship will bring 188 megawatts of power on a daily basis to Lebanon, as part of an agreement with Turkish energy company Karadeniz Holdings. Director General of Lebanon’s national electricity board, Kamal Hayek, has said the ship will provide the country with two additional hours of electricity, much needed ahead of high summer temperatures later this year. Lebanon’s Energy Minister Jobran Basil has also welcomed the operation, claiming it will serve Lebanese citizens and trade. Authorities hope to provide 24-hour electricity supply every day by 2015.
