The final night of the sixth edition of the Mubadala Football Tournament, one of Mubadala’s community outreach programmes, concluded on Thursday night with Al Muroor crowned 2016 champions.
The five day tournament kicked off on Sunday with over 200 players battling it out at Zayed Sports City Stadium. Out of 238 teams registered, sixteen teams were selected to play three intensive nights of round robin football before moving on to two nights of final playoffs. Al Muroor team won in a thrilling final match against Al Bateen by a score of 2 – 1 in penalty shoot-outs after drawing 1 – 1 at full time.
Saoud Karmastaji, Assistant Manager, Group Communications, Mubadala, said, "Through our programmes and partnerships, our aim is not only develop and empower UAE nationals to realize opportunities in various business sectors which serve Abu Dhabi’s economic diversification, but also support the development of a well-rounded generation."
He added, "Mubadala Football Tournament is one of a few initiatives organised by us to encourage members of the community to adapt a healthy and active lifestyle. We are delighted to have successfully hosted such a well-established event in the capital for the sixth consecutive year."
Ibrahim Fathi from Al Bateen was named as the tournament’s Top Scorer, Sultan Al Mansouri from Al Shahama was announced as the Most Valuable Player, while Saif Jasim from Al Muroor was named as Best Goalkeeper.
Through the Mubadala Football Tournament and a number of other community engagement activities, such as the Mubadala Tennis in Schools (MTiS), Mubadala aims to encourage members of the public to maintain an active lifestyle.
Last year, team HOMKO was crowned as champion following its victory against Salesbury by a score of 2 – 0 in an exciting penalty shoot-out, after drawing 2 – 2 at full time.
