David Trezeguet touched down in Buenos Aires today ahead of talks with River Plate, and immediately declared his desire to wear the Millonarios jersey. Trezeguet’s father, former centre-back Jorge, hails from Argentina, and although the 34-year-old striker was born in France, he began his career with Platense in the Argentinian top flight. The former Monaco, Juventus and Hercules man has been without a club since leaving Emirati outfit Baniyas last month. “I want to play for River to fulfil a supporter’s dream, that’s why I’m here,” said Trezeguet, a 1998 FIFA World Cup™ winner who also scored the golden goal which clinched France UEFA EURO 2000 glory. River, the record 33-time Argentinian champions, were relegated for the first time in their 110-year-old history earlier this year. Now under the command of Matias Almeyda, Los Millonarios currently occupy second place – the last promotion slot – in the second flight, two points behind Instituto and two clear of third-placed Rosario Central. River won for the first time in four home matches on Sunday. “The club is going through a difficult period, and this is something that gives me more desire to crown my career here. It would be great. I feel in shape to help the club a lot, and I want to show my qualities in Argentinian football.” Trezeguet, who is renowned for his aerial ability, is the most prolific foreigner in Juventus history. The Rouen native also netted 34 goals in 71 internationals between 1998 and 2008, making him the third-highest all-time marksman for France behind Thierry Henry and Michel Platini.
