Al Wahda put behind a poor season to pick up the first silverware on offer in the 2011-12 UAE football season after shooting down favourites Al Jazira in the sudden death of the Super Cup at the Baniyas Stadium on Saturday night. In a dramatic encounter in which Al Wahda were awarded three penalties and with a lot of goalmouth action, champions Al Jazira were forced to play second fiddle. After a 2-2 draw in regulation time, veteran goalkeeper Moataz Abdullah brought off a brilliant save in the sudden-death to give Al Wahda the Super Cup and also avenge their 4-0 loss to Al Jazira in the President's Cup final last season. Al Wahda coach Josef Hickersberger, whose side started without eight regulars from last season, praised his players, singling out Hugo Henrique and debutant defender Walid Al Yammahi. Fernando Baiano, Hamdan Al Kamali, Haider Alo Ali, Basheer Saeed and Esmail Mattar, who appeared in the final minutes, did not start while Al Wahda also missed Fahad Masoud, Abdul Rahim Juma and Hassan Ameen who have left the club. "Al Wahda managed to play an attacking game and after Hugo missed an early penalty, the Brazilian did well to convert the next two though he again failed in the shoot-out. Hugo showed a lot of courage. After missing the first he took the next two and scored. You also don't see that [three penalties] often because it takes a brave man to award three penalties in a match," the Austrian said.
