The Bahrain National Drag Racing Championship 2014/2015 season resumes this week with the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir hosting the fourth and penultimate round of action. The event is National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) sanctioned, as the quarter-mile drag strip at the BIC is listed on the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Worldwide Network.
The desert drag strip will host four consecutive nights of action beginning today ad moving into tomorrow with back-to-back evenings of Test and Tune. The qualifying rounds will be on February 26, and the race day will be n February 27, when the region’s very best drag racers will vie for the honours.
Over 100 drag racers from around the Gulf, as well as a handful from the United States, are expected to participate. They will battle it out in 13 different categories, including 10 for cars and three for motorbikes. Each of the participants will aim to collect the maximum number of points from the event and ultimately clinch their class title by the end of the season after five rounds. In addition to the champion’s trophy, the winners will also take home a "Wally" – a prominent award in drag racing given only to champions of NHRA-sanctioned events.
Racing both today and tomorrow night are scheduled to take place between 8.00 pm and 12 midnight. On February 26 and 27 racing resumes at 4pm.
The round has been organised by BIC in cooperation with the Bahrain Drag Racing Club and the Bahrain Motor Federation.
Tickets can be purchased at the gate. Tickets to the Test and Tune cost BD2 each night. For qualifying and race day, tickets are BD5 for both days at the start line grandstand, while they go for BD3 on both days at the Batelco Grandstand. Children aged up to 12 years pay only half the price.
On the sidelines of the event will be BIC’s Dragster Xpereince – perhaps the circuit’s most sought-after public activities. Clients get into one of BIC’s three-seater Top Dragsters for a run down the quarter-mile strip at mind-boggling speed, powering from zero to 100kph in just one second.
The Xperience costs BD40 per person and the activity can be done at any time during the upcoming meeting. Following this week’s events, the championship finale is scheduled to be held from March 3 to 6.
