Luis Enrique put out a side at Wembley in London that had his stamp on it but did not lose Spain's identity that they have established over more than ten years. It was almost the perfect start at a mythical stadium and against an England side that had got to the World Cup semi-finals.
Spain came from behind after a goal from Rashford, showing the same character as the coach and more than just an important win it was a sign of what is to come.
Spain still wanted to have the ball and move it around, but at the same time were looking to move forward quicker. Without the ball, they were more aggressive in trying to get it back quickly while they pressed high up the pitch and made England suffer.
One player that has really benefitted from this change of approach is Saul who was not used in Russia.
"He has quality, physically great and a really strong mentality," said Luis Enrique.
"He is good tactically and can score goals....He is fantastic."
Saul has many virtues as a player and is of a style that Spain does not have in abundance as he is more direct, gets forward well and gets goals.
It was also a good night for the goalkeeper David de Gea after the difficult time he had in Russia. For him, the problem was psychological and he needed games like that at Wembley.
Elsewhere, Rodrigo stood out and as a team they responded
well to going a goal down, it was a pass with distinction, the Spanish MARCA newspaper reported.
