Great Britain's men's 5000 metres world champion Mo Farah was named European male athlete of the year on Wednesday. The 28-year-old Somalia-born star - who also won silver in the 10,000m at the world championships in August - won the award ahead of last year's winner Christophe Lemaitre of France. Russia's 800m world champion Mariya Savinova of Russia was named female athlete of the year. Farah's decision to go to the United States to train this year for the world championships was rewarded with his medals as he became the first European athlete to win a global 5000m title since the subsequently disgraced German Dieter Baumann won the 1992 Olympics crown. Farah, European champion at both 5000 and 10000m, will receive his award along with Savinova at the ceremony in Spain on October 15.
