European football's ruling body UEFA has confirmed the exclusion of Greek side Olympiakos Volos from the Europa League due to its implication in a match-fixing scandal, a UEFA official told AFP Thursday. Volos, who have until midnight on Monday to appeal the decision, were set to meet French side Paris Saint-Germain in the competition. UEFA said it would soon "choose which team will replace" Volos ahead of the play-off rounds, to be played on August 18 and 25. Luxembourg side Differdange, eliminated by Volos in the previous round, could be the main beneficiaries although UEFA could decide to allow PSG to advance unhindered into the group phase.
