Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger announced he was retiring from international football on Friday after 120 appearances for the national team.
His last game was the 2-0 semi-final defeat by France at Euro 2016 this month where the 31-year-old conceded a penalty, German news agency reported "I have asked the coach not to consider me for the national team in future as I would like to retire from internationals," he wrote on Twitter.
The 31-year-old Manchester United midfielder, who began his international career in 2004, has had an injury-prone few years and despite being captain he did not start at Euro 2016 until the semi-final due to a lack of match fitness and the form of Sami Khedira.
His predecessor as Germany captain, Philipp Lahm, quit in 2014 after Germany lifted the World Cup.
