Doping retest of two Russian female weightlifters, who competed in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, has shown positive results, local media reported Tuesday.
Sample B probes of Marina Shainova and Nadezhda Evstyukhina, respectively the 2008 Olympics silver and bronze medalists, tested positive for doping substance Turinabol, said the athletes' coach Vladimir Shainov.
"We have not yet decided what to do next," Shainov told Tass news agency, adding that the two weight-lifters were expected to be suspended and stripped of their medals.
On Monday, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) said it had been notified by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that the retesting of the samples taken during the 2008 Beijing Olympics produced "adverse analytical findings" in 10 of them, and another 10 in the samples of the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The IWF did not disclose the names before the IOC official procedures conclude, but noted some samples involved medal winners.
In late May, the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) said it had received a notification of the IOC that the results of cross-checking of the doping Samples A, taken at the time of the 2008 Olympics, showed positive results for 14 Russian athletes in three sports.
It did not provide the names, but Russian Match TV then published a list, saying that eleven of the implicated athletes were from track and field, two were weightlifters and one rower.
On June 3, the ROC announced that B samples, taken during the 2008 Olympics, of Russian race walker Denis Nizhegorodov and rower Alexander Kornilov proved to be negative for banned substances, and no disciplinary procedures will be initiated against them.
The IOC has retested 454 selected doping samples from the 2008 Olympic Games and 265 samples from the 2012 Olympics, and vowed to further extend the re-analysis program targeting medalists from both Games.
The IOC Executive Board said in a statement on June 1 that it would not hesitate to punish all those found responsible for using or administering doping products during its pre-Olympic testing program, with special attention paid to Kenya, Russia and Mexico, the countries with noncompliant testing programs.
It added that all implicated athletes would be denied the right to participate in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.,
