Prosecutors in Cairo ordered the arrest of an underground metro driver after a train he was driving ran over a teenage girl at a central station, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

The incident took place on Monday afternoon at the Dokki station.

Initial investigations showed that the 16-year-old girl lost her balance because of overcrowding and fell onto the tracks as she was preparing to board a train pulling in to the station. Her body was cut into four parts in the accident,  Al-Ahram reported.

Prosecutors ordered surveillance cameras at the station be examined.

Over 3.5 million of Greater Cairo's 21 million inhabitants rely on the subway for their daily travel, according to official estimates by the country's national tunnels authority
