A top leader of Ansar Bayt Al-Maqdis militant group was killed in Egypt's Nile Delta in a raid tracking "wanted terrorist elements", the Interior Ministry has said.
Samir Mansour Sobhi tried to detonate an explosive belt during a confrontation with security forces, but he was killed in the governorate of Dakahlia, about 125 kilometers north of Cairo, a ministry statement added.
Explosive experts managed to defuse the belt. A machine gun and an amount of bullets were found with Sobhi, it said.
According to the statement, the key militant was well-trained on using all types of arms, as well as making explosive devices. He was wanted for involvement in previous acts of violence.
