More than 160 fishermen reached India in the wee hours of Tuesday after being released by Pakistan as part of a goodwill gesture, a senior official said.

"The fishermen crossed over to India through land border at Wagah near Amritsar town in the northern state of Punjab. They were lodged in two different jails across Pakistan and (Pakistan) released them during the weekend," he said on condition of anonymity.

Three minors were part of the group of fishermen, who had been arrested by Pakistan for venturing into its territorial waters while on fishing trips, the official said.

The Indian fishermen were released as part of an understanding reached between the two countries during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in Russia recently.

India and Pakistan often release from jails fishermen who entered into each other's territorial waters during fishing trips in high seas.
