A group of 31 trekkers, including 23 Britons trapped by flash floods in Indian-controlled Kashmir, were rescued, police said Friday.

The group was rescued from Markha-Sko area of Leh in the mountainous area of Ladakh province.

"A group of 23 British citizens comprising of one male (group leader), one female teacher and 21 female students besides eight local guides and cooks were trapped due to flash floods in Markha- Sko area of Leh," a police spokesman said. "The group had went for trekking on Sunday."

Police officials said bad weather conditions triggered flash floods in the area that pushed up water level and made areas inaccessible.

According to police, the trekkers were safely rescued with the help of helicopter and were shifted to Moonline Guest House in Leh.
