An earthquake measuring 5.5 magnitude on the Richter scale hit Tuesday off the coast of Russia's eastern Shikotan Island, which is part of the Kuril chain, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.
According to USGS, the epicenter of the quake was located some 57 kilometers (35 miles) east of Shikotan’s coast at a depth of 69.3 kilometers. No tsunami threat has been declared in connection with the earthquake.
