Thousands of residents in the northeastern port city of Dalian in China took to the streets on Sunday to protest the work of the local chemical plant, Chinese media reported. The residents are demanding that the Fuija chemical plant be moved from the city. The plant produces paraxylene, a toxic material used as a raw material for the production of plastics. Calls to relocate the plant have intensified after a tropical storm broke a dam protecting the plant last week, raising the fears of toxic leaks. Some clashes between the protesters and the police have been reported. Local authorities have opened talks with the demonstrators, promising to resolve the issue of the plant's relocation.
