Crews are cleaning up thousands of migratory birds that made a crash landing in Utah after apparently mistaking a Walmart parking lot and other areas as bodies of water. Teresa Griffin of the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources tells the Spectrum newspaper that employees have been driving around the area picking up the dead or injured birds. People are also dropping off birds at the department’s office. Officials say storm clouds above city lights Monday night probably confused thousands of grebes, which are a duck-like aquatic bird that migrates south for the winter.Thousands of the birds were killed, but more than 2,000 had been rescued by Tuesday evening.
