Kristianstad - UPI

It was a harrowing day for 3-year-old Leo, who fell into a tight crevice of rock Sunday morning during an outing with his parents in Kristianstad, Sweden. While the Hogbergs were enjoying a leisurely walk in the hiking area of Kjugekull, Leo suddenly dropped about 10 feet into a tight crevice in the rocky ground. Rescue efforts spanned the remainder of the day, as the crevice was too narrow for an adult to reach the toddler. Rescuers attempted to drop a rope down to the boy, but he was too scared to maintain a hold while they tried to draw him up. A local girl tried to climb down to grab him, but could not fit. Finally, as dusk swiftly approached, Malmo climber David Crawley happened to be nearby and offered to help. Rescuers held him by the ankles as he dangled upside down and grabbed Leo's hands, pulling him up, The Local reported. Henrik Hogberg's son was returned to him safe and sound shortly before 4 p.m., drawing the frightful day to a close, the report said. "We are so terribly grateful for the fantastic input of the emergency services and the climber who helped us," he said.
