Tickets went on sale on Friday for a travelling Rolling Stones exhibition that will feature 500 artefacts from the band's personal archives, including costumes, instruments and rare images.

The show, spread across two floors of the Saatchi Gallery in London will open in April next year and is billed by organisers as "the most comprehensive and immersive insight" into the Rolling Stones.

After three months in London it will embark on a four-year world tour from November 2016, taking in 11 cities including Los Angeles, New York and Tokyo.

"We've been thinking about it for quite a long time but wanted it to be just right and on a large scale, just like planning our touring concert productions," the band's 71-year-old frontman Mick Jagger said.

"We've got a lot of stuff," he added in a promotional video for the show, called "Exhibitionism".

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards said it would not be just about band members but also "all of the bits and pieces and technology and instruments".

Adverts for the show feature the band's famously provocative lips logo on the crotch of a woman in a bikini and have been banned from London's transport network because considered too lewd.

It is the first ever major exhibition devoted to the career of the legendary British rockers, who started out as a London blues band in the early 1960s.

Among the exhibits will be personal diaries, artwork and rarely-seen video clips, as well as childhood photos of the Rolling Stones members growing up.

The Saatchi Gallery is located in Chelsea, close to a flat which Jagger shared in 1962 with fellow band member Keith Richards and the late Brian Jones, an original leader of the Rolling Stones.
