The modern art gallery "Lawrie-Shabibi" in Dubai pays tribute to the Algerian women through "Bed of Broken Mirrors", an exhibition of Iranian-born US painter, Asad Faulwell. The exhibition, which runs until March 11, dedicated to the Algerian women is part of a series of works by the artist entitled "Women of Algiers". The participation of Algerian women in the multifaceted struggles of national liberation movement is enhanced by the artist who refers to Eugène Delacroix and Pablo Picasso, who respectively displayed Algiers' women in works in 1834 and 1954. Distancing himself from the Orientalist artists approach of conquest, who first had painted women from Algeria, Faulwell said to owe his inspiration to Gillo Pontecorvo’s film "The Battle of Algiers" (1966). The paintings of the artist who exhibits for the first time to "Lawrie-Shabibi" gallery stem from "beauty and ugliness" to represent the heroic struggles of the Algerian women. Meriem Bouattoura, Ourida Meddad, Djamila Bouhired, Djamila Bouazza and Danielle Minne, icons of the liberation war that the US painter revives in his works.
