Mixing fiction and history, the 2007 novel by author Sylvia Smoller, “Rachel and Aleks: A Historical Novel of Life, Love, and WWII” (published by iUniverse) takes a human approach to the topics of war, romantic relationships and history.
“Rachel and Aleks” was awarded the iUniverse Editor’s Choice and Publisher’s Choice awards in 2007 for its excellence in editorial integrity and outstanding design, and will be featured at the 2014 Frankfurt Book Fair in October.
Before Hitler’s rise to power, Rachel Jonish, a beautiful and spirited young woman living in a small village in Poland, marries Aleks Mischler, a political journalist who becomes a government official.
The couple lives a contented life in Warsaw, despite the tumultuous political landscape of the 1940s. When Aleks is targeted by the growing anti-Semitic government, the couple’s lives change forever.
“The love story is universal,” Smoller says. “The choices Rachel must make still plague women. The refugee experience applies to many groups in today’s world.”
Readers can expect thrilling accounts of Rachel and Aleks’ escape and new life in America where they attempt to establish businesses and new lives after fleeing Nazi invasions on a route through Russia and Japan.
