Some expats are so sure that we Saudis don’t smile! You may also consider that a few of them do believe that “committing” a smile is some sort of a sin! What I’m here to say is: “Come on guys!” Smiling is much welcomed in our culture. We do smile, and we do love to see people smiling! I had this idea of clearing the confusion when I used to work for Radio Riyadh years ago! The idea was to run a show called “Cultural Tips.” I decided, then, to highlight 30 major misleading stereotypes about Saudis. It is because I know how keen the newcomer is to receive any guidance, especially in a cultural perspective. Therefore, this mini column shall attempt to help in making things more clear. This column will also try to answer some of your questions regarding the issue of our Saudi culture. How, who, when and what are all welcomed here. Now that I hope we are done with the smile issue, please feel free to write to me or to Arab News. I think we can be of some help! You may also comment directly on our website.
