US 'deeply concerned' about Egypt violence

The United States has said it is "deeply concerned" by increasing violence across Egypt. A State Department spokesperson called on Egypt's military to exercise "maximum restraint" in responding to protesters. Jay Carney added that the White House is reviewing the legal implications of the change of government in Egypt, and is yet to decide whether it was a coup. He told reporters that the US objective is to promote a return to democracy.
