Minister of Labour and Minister of Transport Nidal Qatamin on Saturday met with Italian Ambassador to Jordan Patrizio Fondi and First Secretary of the Embassy of Italy in Jordan Natalia Sangniti to discuss ways to improve cooperation between the two countries in the labour and transportation sectors. Qatamin delivered a briefing on the labour ministry’s responsibility of providing Jordanians with job opportunities through the launching of employment campaigns, especially for the youth, orphans, women and people with disabilities. He said the ministry seeks to regulate the local labour market by controlling and regulating the influx of foreign workers, limiting their numbers and allowing them to work only in sectors where Jordanians do not work. “We tried to minimize the impact of more than 500,000 Syrian refugees on the labour market by directing them to work in sectors that need foreign workers,” the minister added. The Italian ambassador expressed his country’s willingness to provide financially support to Jordan in order to help the Kingdom cope with the growing burden of Syrian refugees. As for the transportation sector, Sangniti highlighted the possibility of Italian companies contributing to the development of railways projects in Jordan in the near future.
