Prince Abdul Aziz bin Salman, assistant minister of petroleum and mineral resources, has cautioned against growing energy wastage in the Kingdom, saying 70 percent of the country’s electricity is used for air-conditioning. Speaking at the Saudi Electricity Efficiency Forum, he said about 80 percent of the Kingdom’s power is consumed by buildings. “Growing energy consumption will have a negative impact on the national economy and sustainable development,” he said. Prince Abdul Aziz, who is chairman of the committee for preparing the national plan to improve energy efficiency, said judicious use of electricity is a national duty. “Three sectors — buildings, communications and industry — consume 90 percent of the country’s energy,” the prince said stressing the need to apply Saudi code to ensure energy efficiency of buildings in the country.
