The creation of an African Fund for the fight against terrorism was recommended Tuesday in Nairobi at the end of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of member countries of the Council for Peace and security of the African Union (AU).
The proposition for the creation of this fund will be submitted to the next Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, Chairman of the Council for Peace and Security for the month of September 2014, Chadian Idriss Deby, said at a press conference.
The Algiers agreement on the fight against terrorism, inked in 1999, its Additional Protocol of 2004 and the establishment of the African Centre for Study and Research on Terrorism (ACSRT) offer a "solid legal and institutional basis" for enhanced cooperation among member countries, especially with regard to the exchange of information on the activities and movements of terrorist groups, participants stressed.
The summit emphasized the need for a "renewed" international action to deny terrorists and violent extremists of any direct or indirect financial support or other.
