Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc., two major South Korean TV makers, increased their share of the global television market in the second quarter, widening their lead over Japanese and Chinese competitors, according to industry data on Tuesday.
Samsung's share of the global TV market in terms of shipments rose to 22.2% for the April-June period, compared with 21.4% for the same quarter last year, data compiled by industry tracker IHS Inc. showed.LG's market share slightly rose to 13.1% for the second quarter from 13% last year.
Third-ranked Sony Corp. saw its market share rise to 5.6% from 5.4%. Two Chinese brands -- TCL and Hisense -- also increased their market shares to 5.6% and 5.5%, respectively.
However, two other Chinese brands, Skyworth and Vizio, lost market share, dropping to 4.1% and 3.9% for the second quarter, compared to 4.2% and 4.3% for the same quarter last year. By country, South Korean TV makers increased their market share to 35.4% for the second quarter, compared to 34.4% a year ago.
Chinese brands also gained market share, hitting 28.9% for the quarter, up from 26.4% for the same quarter last year. Japanese brands came third with 13.7%, compared to 15.9% last year.
