European stocks were mixed Tuesday afternoon in quiet holiday week trade, with Paris CAC 40 up 0.17 percent to 3,107.45 points. In Frankfurt, the DAX advanced 0.35 percent to 5,899.36 points after a three-day holiday weekend, while the London Stock Exchange was closed. Milan was down 0.97 percent and Madrid 0.25 percent. With currency trading also closed in London, the euro was flat in early US trade at $1.3067, compared with $1.3059 in Asian trade on Monday. US stocks opened lower in the first day of trade after the Christmas holiday, amid mixed signs on holiday retail sales, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipping 0.16 percent to 12,274.40 points in the first 10 minutes of trade. The broader S&P 500 slid 0.23 percent to 1,262.37 points, while the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.30 percent to 2,610.82 points.
