Tokyo shares closed the morning session lower on Tuesday as the yen's rise against the U.S. dollar and U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to impose border taxes on firms that move American factories overseas dampened investor sentiment.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average slid 13.32 points, or 0.07 percent, from Monday to 18,877.71.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange fell 4.28 points, or 0.28 percent, to 1,510.35.
Decliners were led by transportation equipment, bank and insurance issues.
