Tokyo shares opened higher on Monday as the yen depreciated slightly against the U.S. dollars in the morning following upbeat assessment of the U.S. economy by the Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 29.42 points, or 0.18 percent, from Friday to 16,575.24.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 2.09 points, or 0.16 percent, to 1,297.76.

Gainers were led by transportation, retail and transportation equipment issues.
