During his performance at the 2014 BET Awards in Los Angeles, recording artist Robin Thicke dedicated a ballad to his estranged wife Paula Patton.
The 37-year-old singer played "Forever Love" from his upcoming album, Paula. Before he started the number, Thicke made it clear who the performance was directed at.
"Good evening, my name is Robin Thicke," Thicke said. "I'd like to dedicate this song to my wife, and say, 'I miss you, and I'm sorry.' This is called 'Forever Love.'"
Paula features 14 songs and is scheduled to be released on July 1.
"I know that you and I have tried so very hard to find a different result," Thicke sang.
"Any time you need a friend, baby, I will be the one that you want.
If you ever doubt it now, baby, I will be there picking you up.
You can lean on me any time, baby, for anything you want and need.
Yeah, see, I don't need any reason, memory, or a season.
Every day I will believe that you and I are meant to be.
You're my forever love."
Thicke and Patton split up after nine years of marriage, and a total of 22 years together. When they announced their breakup, the two released a statement saying, "We will always love each other and be best friends; however, we have mutually decided to separate."
After the song was done, host Chris Rock joked about Thicke's emotional effort.
"He's singing like she don't know him," Rock said. "I miss the other song, ["Blurred Lines"], the one that sounded like Marvin Gaye."
