A fifth bout of UN-sponsored Syrian peace talks kicked off Tuesday in the Kazakh capital Astana after the arrival of all delegations.
Kazakhstan’s foreign ministry confirmed that nine delegates from the armed Syrian opposition had arrived for the two-day discussions, held under the auspices of UN Syria envoy Staffan De Mistura, according to the Russia Today website.
Astana had hosted four rounds of negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition factions, the last of which was held in early May and saw the signing of a memorandum sponsored by Russia, Turkey and Iran to establish four separate de-escalation zones in Syria for at least six months
