A special court in Dakar on Thursday upheld former Chadian president Hissene Habre's life sentence for war crimes, crimes against humanity and torture, but acquitted him of rape.
Appeal court president Wafi Ougadeye said he confirmed the life sentence handed down against Habre in May last year, a landmark ruling seen as a blow to the impunity long enjoyed by repressive rulers.
