Spain's government on Tuesday rejected the Catalan leader's "tacit" declaration of independence after he left the door open to secession but stopped short of declaring an outright split from the country.

"It's unacceptable to make a tacit declaration of independence to then suspend it in an explicit manner," a central government spokesman told AFP.
