Pope Francis on Friday called for "unconditional respect" for human rights as he addressed Egypt's president on a visit to the Arab world's most populous country.
"Development, prosperity and peace" demand "above all, unconditional respect for inalienable human rights such as equality among all citizens, religious freedom and freedom of expression, without any distinction," he said.
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has been criticised internationally for human rights abuses since he led the military overthrow of his Islamist predecessor Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
