Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy asked the Senate Friday for the go-ahead to depose Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont and his executive in a bid to stop their independence drive.

Speaking to the upper house in Madrid, he urged them to agree to "proceed to the dismissal of the president of the Catalan government, his vice-president and all regional ministers."
