US-backed fighters were on Thursday clearing the last remaining Islamic State group jihadists from their Syrian bastion Raqa, a monitor said.

"The Syrian Democratic Forces and American special forces began a mopping up operation in Raqa," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, adding that jihadist holdouts were still hiding in the city centre and that mines were slowing down the advance.
