Beirut - Arabstoday
Employees at the state-run Tele Liban television station are threatening an unspecified “escalation” if their demand for timely payment of wages remains unmet, reported the National News Agency over the weekend. The NNA’s report quoted the head of the Union of Television Employees in Lebanon, Nada Saliba Choueiri, as saying that if Tele Liban employees do not receive their pay by Feb. 6, a general meeting will be held the following day to agree on additional measures, including the possibility of a strike. The report says that Choueiri declared in a statement that the television union’s decision came “after repeated and intensive attempts by the council of the Union of Television Employees in Lebanon to ensure prompt payment of salaries met with failure.” The statement went on to describe the difficulties such repeated delays have caused for employees in the industry, many of whom can barely afford basic foodstuffs and find themselves unable to pay their children’s school tuition.
