People have expressed shock and dismay online at the decision by a court here

People have expressed shock and dismay online at the decision by a court here to annul the marriage of a pregnant woman and a soldier serving his country on the border.
According to a report in a local publication, the uncles of the woman had moved the court to have the marriage annulled on the basis of “unequal social status” of the families of the couple. After the judge approved the request, the woman highlighted her plight on social media, urging the authorities to reconsider the case.
Users on Twitter circulated a video of the grieving wife who said she married several months ago with the consent of her brother, after she won a case against her father who had refused to let her marry. She said she was eight months pregnant and wanted to live a normal life with her baby and husband.
This is not the first such incident involving the courts. Recently a judge in the Eastern Province issued a verdict in favor of a father who had refused to let his daughter marry a young man. The woman ran away with the young man but was later arrested.
According to judicial sources, there have been 16 applications to annul marriage contracts across the country for various reasons, including declaring one of the spouses unfit.
